Sub plans
Of Mice and Men Sub Plans: Character X-Ray and Flip and Find, Sub Day Ready
Plans for the days you are out. Character X-Ray (a group poster, with a slide file for each of eight characters) and Flip and Find (a cut-and-fold flip book students build a layer at a time as they read) each come with a one-page sub day plan.
Use one or both: each works on its own. Honors and Academic files are included, and so are accommodated large-print and read-aloud-ready Flip and Find sheets.

WHAT'S INSIDE: 143 pages in 117 files
CHARACTER X-RAY
- A group poster taught in two shorter sittings: what the ranch sees on the outside of a character, and what the book shows underneath. Part 1 covers Boxes 1-6 and Part 2 covers Boxes 7-12.
- A poster, two scan plans and a checklist and rubric, for Honors and Academic, with print and black-and-white versions.
- A slide file for each of eight characters, Honors and Academic, for groups with devices.
- A one-page sub day plan for each part, and a teacher handbook. Part 1 or Part 2 alone fills a sub day, and a substitute who has not read the book can run either one without the other.
FLIP AND FIND
- A flip book students build a layer at a time as they read: a base, one sheet for each chapter and a closer, for Honors and Academic, which students build into a page-referenced index of the novel for test review.
- An assembly guide for the cut-and-fold book, a teacher guide and key, and a one-page sub day plan: one chapter layer per period, no scissors or binding.
- Accommodated large-print and read-aloud-ready versions, slide files (.pptx) and editable Word copies. Your student's IEP or 504 team decides what each student is provided.
HOW IT RUNS
- Character X-Ray: each part fills a class period of about 35 to 45 minutes. Run it once the class has finished the novel. Prep: about 20 minutes (groups, characters, tape, colored pencils, wall space).
- Flip and Find: each chapter layer takes about 10 to 15 minutes. For a sub day, use a layer the class has already read and been checked on. Print in stages, and bind with brads or rings: never staple.
- Honors and Academic classes use their own track's files.
PRINT AND DIGITAL
Character X-Ray prints for groups, with a slide file (.pptx) for each character for groups that have devices. Flip and Find prints and folds on paper, with slide files (.pptx) and Word copies to edit.
