Of Mice and Men Escape Room C: What the Valley Keeps, Whole-Novel Review
Finish the book with a room your class has to earn. Escape Room C, What the Valley Keeps, sends teams across a 1930s ranch: turn a brass decoder wheel, follow a boot-print trail, and build the final two words from the book.
Run it in one period of 55 minutes or longer, or in two sessions, as a Digital Room or a Paper room. It is a stand-alone activity: use it with any plan, or skip it, and the rest of your unit is not affected.

WHAT YOUR CLASS DOES
Step onto a 1930s ranch, illustrated in the unit's own look. Students turn a brass decoder wheel to open one lock: drag it, tap the buttons or use the keyboard. An illustrated ranch map sends them tile by tile, and a boot-print trail appears once they find the way. The final lock builds two words from the book, out of six scrambled letter-chunks per form. Every lock is a plot fact or described detail, never reprinted text.
HOW IT RUNS
- When: after Chapter 6, as the unit's capstone.
- Time: one period of 55 minutes or longer with both reflections, or two sessions (the first about 25 minutes, the second about 35 to 40 minutes with the stand-up bonus and both reflections).
- Prep: about 40 minutes. Print one packet per team, cut and fasten the paper cipher wheels (do it ahead if time is short), print the optional bonus cards, and read the Read First sheet once before class. Not print and go.
- A Read First sheet gives the timing and hint steps; the answer key is its own page. The Paper room works the same way.
- Honors and Academic classes use the same room.
PRINT AND DIGITAL
Run the Paper room from its printed pieces with no device, or play the Digital Room. The Digital Room and the host screen are web files that open offline in Chrome or Edge on Windows, with no install and no account. They also work in Chrome on Chromebooks.
